Happy Birthday Aung San Suu Kyi

Leader of the National League for Democracy in Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi is 61 today, and still under house-arrest after winning elections in 1989. It is heart-breaking. The whole story of Burma is heart-breaking. But she perseveres, as the Burmese always have.

My mother is from Burma.

She was a playmate of Aung Sand Suu Kyi as a child. My grandfather was a diplomat.

My mother is also from Burma!

My grandmother was Burmese, and my grandfather was English.

I met the Burmese ambassador to Canada when I was younger. The respect he showed me was incredible.
